How to Use WatchGist: Install, Summarize, and Chat with Any YouTube Video
WatchGist is a free Chrome extension that adds an AI panel next to the YouTube player. It gives you a structured summary of any video — with clickable timestamps — and lets you ask follow-up questions grounded in the actual transcript. This guide walks through everything: installing the extension, reading your first summary, chatting with a video, and choosing between the Free and Pro plans.
1. Install WatchGist from the Chrome Web Store
Head to the WatchGist page on the Chrome Web Store and click Add to Chrome. That's the whole setup — there is no account creation step, no API key, and nothing to configure. Your first 5 summaries are free without signing up, so you can try it before deciding whether to create an account.
WatchGist works on Chrome and Chromium-based browsers (Edge, Brave, Arc). The extension only runs on YouTube pages — it does not read or track any other browsing.
2. Open any YouTube video
Once installed, open any video on YouTube. The WatchGist panel appears automatically next to the player — there is nothing to copy, paste, or switch tabs for. This is the main difference from workflows like pasting a transcript into ChatGPT: the summary lives where you are already watching.
3. Read the summary
Open the panel and WatchGist generates a structured summary of the video in seconds. A summary has four parts:
- Overview — a few sentences on what the video is about and who it's for.
- Key points — the main arguments, steps, or facts, each tied to a timestamp.
- Timeline — a chapter-style breakdown of the video from start to finish.
- Takeaways — the practical conclusions worth remembering.
Every timestamp is clickable. If a key point looks interesting, click its timestamp and the player jumps straight to that moment — so the summary works as a table of contents for the video, not a replacement for it.
4. Choose your output language
Summaries and chat answers are available in 15 output languages, regardless of the language the video was recorded in. You can watch an English conference talk and read the summary in Japanese, Spanish, or German. Set your preferred language once in the panel and WatchGist remembers it.
5. Chat with the video
Below the summary is a chat box. Ask anything about the video — "What tools did they recommend?", "Summarize the section about pricing", "What was the counter-argument at the end?" — and WatchGist answers using the video's transcript as its source.
Two things make this different from asking a general chatbot:
- Answers are grounded in the transcript. WatchGist answers from what was actually said in the video, not from the model's general knowledge — which keeps it from inventing claims the speaker never made.
- Answers cite their sources. Each answer links to the moments in the video it drew from, so you can click through and verify in one second.
You can keep the conversation going with as many follow-up questions as your plan allows.
Free vs. account vs. Pro
| No sign-up | Free account | Pro ($5/mo) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summaries | 5 total | 10 / month | 500 / month |
| Chat messages | — | 30 / month | 2,000 / month |
| Output languages | 15 | 15 | 15 |
Summaries are counted in units: one unit per 2 hours of video, so a typical video costs 1 unit and a 3-hour podcast costs 2. Every plan has the same features — the only difference is how much you can process per month. Most casual viewers do fine on the free account; Pro is for people who work through a lot of video. Troubleshooting
- The panel doesn't appear. Refresh the YouTube tab after installing. If it still doesn't show, check that the extension is enabled at chrome://extensions.
- "No transcript available." A small number of videos have captions disabled by the uploader. WatchGist needs a transcript to stay grounded, so those videos can't be summarized.
- You hit a limit. Free counters reset monthly. If you run out mid-month, upgrading to Pro takes effect immediately.
